DEADEYE FMP PROJECT
SECONDARY RESEARCH
Literature Review
Environment
For my FMP, I plan to make a level set in the Chinese quarter of Birmingham, England. I originally made a concept for this level around three or four years ago, and I believe it was inspired by the King of Chinatown mission from Hitman: Absolution (2012), with the main difference being that the level takes place in the Chinatown district of Chicago, Illinois, USA, instead of Birmingham. Other differences include that the 47 (protagonist of the Hitman games, controlled by the player) was sent to eliminate his contact’s business rival, also known as The King, while Deadeye, the playable character in my level, has been sent to Chinatown to eliminate a fugitive named Kai Treadman who murdered a college student. I was inspired to create the Deadeye character and story after playing Hitman (2016) and taking a strong interest in it.

When I originally made the floorplan of the level, I was basing it off a memory of the plaza in the middle of the Arcadian complex when I visited the place around four years prior to designing the level. I recently went on google earth to take another look at the same plaza for inspiration of a new floorplan, and it looked barely anything like I remembered. I was able to remember the elevated balconies around the plaza, but the water fountain was very small compared to what I remembered. The original floorplan I made on paper had a massive plaza with a pagoda in the middle, a massive multi-gate entrance leading to a main road, and small streams of water separating the different corners of the plaza. There was a sweet shop, a gentlemen’s club, and Treadman’s penthouse towered over the plaza from above an electronics shop. Unfortunately, that floorplan has become lost to time, however, I already have a slight idea of a floor plan for the Unreal Level. It is going to include the Sweet shop and small streams just like the old floorplan, and a certain asset from the Infinity Blade castle asset pack is going to allow a link between a small bamboo park and the main plaza, and also a small entrance into the penthouse tower if the player manages to find a key.

I was able to get a better look around the Arcadian than I did seven years ago using Google earth, and I managed to discover a small alley named Cathay Street, which is strewn with Asian-speaking shops on either side, and the entrance is marked with a massive red gate, built in a Japanese style. The architecture and culture seen around Cathay street is exactly what I was looking for as inspiration for shops around the plaza, in contrast to the main Arcadian complex which has a more modern and bland sort of feel to it. I want my level to have multiple buildings built with an Asian-style architecture, such as emerald green tiled roofs and red wooden balconies. There happens to be a small restaurant complex on the block opposite to the Arcadian, named China Court, which utilizes the exact architecture that I’m looking to put in my level. I want the level landscape and soundscape to really tell the player ‘This is Chinatown, not just any ordinary block around Birmingham’.
Character Design
For Deadeye himself, I was inspired by characters like Deadpool (Marvel Comics), Deathstroke (DC Comics), and Agent 47 (Hitman series, IO interactive). His name was originally Deadstorm, but since that name was already taken by another character in DC comics, I chose to change his name to Deadeye. His suit was originally going to be dark blue and orange (very similar to Deathstroke), but I soon ditched this for a lighter shade of blue and red, since the color blue usually symbolizes good while red symbolizes badness, and the color palette reference’s Deadeye’s conflicted moral compass. I then chose to make his mask a skull since it relates to elements of the undead, and it is outfitted with a thermal vision visor and environment scanner to mimic Agent 47’s instinct ability seen in recent Hitman games, and the idea for a scanner in the mask was inspired by the detective vision that Batman (DC Comics) uses.
Then I decided that he would have something on his face to make him more distinct from normal people, and it was originally going to be swollen orange veins climbing up his bottom jaw from his neck. I soon ditched this since it wouldn’t go with the color palette of his suit, and I changed his facial detail to two scars over one eye, giving more meaning to his new name ‘Deadeye’. Other than the scar and being infected with a reanimation virus, Deadeye is a 19-year-old male with a medium height and a rather muscular build.
For Treadman, I plan to have him wearing either a traditional black kimono or a black robe with blonde curly hair. He is meant to be a 20-year-old overweight male and was inspired by the character trope of a spoiled rich child. He was also partially inspired by a bully that I would unfortunately have frequent encounters with during the first couple of years during High school.

Something the inspirational characters have in common is that they use an assortment of weapons, ranging from firearms to swords. The only difference is the choice in apparel and the fact that 47 makes use of poisons, disguises and accidents to kill his targets.
Agent 47, has a tendency to use multiple aliases. Choice of apparel is normally his signature suit, a black overcoat with formal black trousers, a white shirt and a red tie, but occasionally wears other suits and also makes use of disguises during missions. Doesn’t have any other distinctive features other than the barcode on the back of his head and the fact he’s completely bald as a result of the cloning process that made him. His main choice of weapons tend to be a silenced pistol, a fiber wire for melee kills and coins as a distraction, but also has access to a large sandbox of weapons, including other firearms such as shotguns and sniper rifles, poisons, explosives and swords. 47’s logo is usually the barcode on the back of his head.
Music and Soundscape
For the music, I currently plan to make a piece inspired by the Punk-rock genre, based on bands such as the Sex Pistols and The Clash. This is due to the overall opinion of those who took the survey that I made for the primary research. Out of genres such as Rock, Punk Rock, Grunge, Heavy Metal, Industrial Metal, and EDM, the majority chose Punk Rock. I plan to use either Bandlab or Groovepad to produce the music pieces for my menu. It also fits very well since my favourite punk rock bands, The Clash and the Sex Pistols, both have British roots and the Deadeye origin story takes place in the UK. For the actual Unreal Level, I plan to make some sort of combination between Punk Rock and traditional Asian music, since the level is based in an area of an English city that revolves heavily around Asian culture. I also plan to add sounds like indistinct chatter and traffic to reflect the bustling atmosphere of the big city.
Menu screen
For my menu screen, I plan to make a screen with four buttons, one to start the game, one to select a mission, one for options, and one for credits. The background will be concept art of the Chinatown level, since that is what most people chose on my survey for primary research. Out of setting art, character art, a story synopsis, and small cinematics, the majority chose setting art. I plan to make this art using Adobe photoshop, and I plan to insert it in the background of the menu similar to the location images seen in Hitman 2 (2018) and Hitman 3 (2021).

Pagoda at the center of the map in the King of Chinatown level. The level is lit up with a red tint from all of the Chinese lanterns strewn across the plaza.
Plaza in the middle of the Arcadian complex, in the Chinatown Quarter of Birmingham. Fountain is in front of the stairs instead of there being multiple streams going down the stairs like I remembered, and also relies on storefront neon lights instead of Chinese lanterns.
Exterior view of the China Court restaurant, photographed by Brian Robert Marshall in 2010. The emerald green roof and the red detailing is what I would like most of the buildings in my level to look like.
Small alley named Cathay street, which is lit up with multiple neon lights and Chinese lanterns, and has many Asian-speaking shops on either side. This is the inspiration I was looking for in order to make the shops around the main plaza, instead of all the generic chain restaurants in the Arcadian.
Deathstroke, also known as Slade Wilson (notice how the aliases between Deadpool and Deathstroke are suspiciously similar, this is because Marvel created Deadpool as a Deathstroke knock-off back in 1992). Choice of apparel is a heavily armored suit with a black/dark blue and orange color palette. His ‘mask’ is actually a helmet with orange on the left side and black/dark blue on the right, and is also missing a right eyehole due to Slade losing his right eye while in the military. His main choice of weapons are his Bo Staff and katana, but he occasionally uses firearms. Unlike Deadpool and 47, Deathstroke doesn’t have a logo.
Deadpool, also known as Wade Wilson. Choice of apparel while on missions is a latex suit with a red and black color palette. His mask is a simple red hood with black and white eyes. He makes use of twin pistols and katanas in combat, and occasionally uses other firearms. His logo is a red and black circle with white eyes, and can be seen in this image on his belt.
Detective vision gameplay from Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009). It is able to detect the skeletons of animals, usually through walls, identifies thugs that are armed and shows their current heart rate and panic level. It can also highlight objects in the environment that can be interacted with and tell the player where certain sounds such as thugs communicating are coming from.
‘Never Mind the B*llocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols’ (1977) - Album by The Sex Pistols.
‘Combat Rock’ (1982) - Album by The Clash.
Location select screen from Hitman 3 (2021). Main interface options are on the top scroll bar. When the player scrolls to locations or campaigns, then the different locations or campaigns will appear on the bottom scroll bar. The corresponding image will fill up the background of the menu when the player hovers over a location or campaign (E.G. Dubai, which takes place at the top of a Skyscraper named the ‘Burj Al Ghazali’. The exterior of the Burj, along with the rest of the Dubai Skyline, can be seen in the background of the menu).
